Miltenberg

Overnight, we left the Rhine and moved onto travelling down the Main River. This involved 13 locks where we were raised up a level each time. By the time we complete this section of locks, we will have been raised 45 metres.

Our boat docked at Miltenberg, a medieval town which came through WW2 relatively unscathed. Most of the houses have red sandstone lower floors and wooden higher floors. The town has suffered some bad floods so now they have installed some very high tech flood walls to prevent future floods.

It is a lovely town to visit. A beautiful town square, really authentic buildings and not too many tourists. Our guide told us a great story. In 2006, a group of neo Nazis visited Miltenberg to conduct a rally. The mayor tried to stop them but couldn't. So, when they set up in the town square and began to talk, the local priest went into the church and rang the church bells non-stop until the neo Nazis gave up and left the town. You can read about the story here.
