Transfer day - and a win
Today was the day that we had to move ships from the Solara to the Ostara. The plan was for an early start heading into Nuremberg for a walking tour around the town, onto a bus to Regensburg for another walking tour and then back onto the bus for a 2.5 hour ride to meet the Ostara at Engelhartszell, just inside Austria.
Turns out I must not have been the only guest who expressed disappointment at missing out on the WW2 sites in Nuremberg. This morning, our cruise director Nevena told us that she had organised for those who wanted to visit the Palace of Justice where the Nuremberg trials were conducted. Yay!
On our tour around the city, we stopped at the Zeppelin Field. Hitler began building (but hardly ever finished) lots of sites around Nuremberg to use for the Nazi Party Annual Rallies. Zeppelin Field is the one most people would recognise with the images of night-time rallies with hundreds of thousands of people there. Our guide explained that, in the years after the war, the Germans tried to destroy a lot of the Nazi structures. In more recent years, the government is investing money into conserving these sites for people to visit and learn from. Parts of the Zeppelin Field stadium have been destroyed but our guide showed us photos of the complete structure to help use visualise the scene more accurately.
Next, 12 of us went to the Palace of Justice to see Courtroom 600 where the Nuremberg trials were held. It is incredible. It is maintained just as it was in 1946. They have a great video presentation they run showing, not just the trial, but the importance of war crimes tribunals as a way to make people and organisations accountable for crimes committed in war time. All 12 of us were so happy we had the chance to do this visit after all.
Regensburg was a bit of a let down after Nuremberg but it was still nice to see it. Just another medieval German city.
Our bus trip to Engelhartszell was long but the last part took us up into the hills on the border of Germany and Austria. We saw some beautiful villages and scenery which made the time pass. Finally, we came back down the other side of the hills and meet our ship, Ostara, on the Danube.

Yay. So glad you didn’t miss out.
